Jennifer Lopez and Gary Sinise are in final negotiations and Vincent D'Onofrio is set to star in Dimension Films' "Impostor" for director Gary Fleder.

It begins shooting June 6 in Los Angeles.

Based on a Philip K. Dick story of the same name, the film centers on an engineer (Sinise) who creates the ultimate weapon in a battle against aliens, only to be suspected as an alien himself. The project is the second in a three-part anthology that Dimension is putting together on the relationship between humans and aliens. Daniel Lupi is producing this segment.

Jennifer Lopez is set to star in "Thieves" for Lawrence Gordon and Universal Pictures.

The project is about a husband-and-wife team that hopes to retire from the con game but are forced into pulling two final jobs, one of which is a breathtaking second-story break-in.

Gary Fleder ("Kiss the Girls") will direct "Thieves." Gordon set up the project in 1994 when he purchased novelist James Cohen's spec script. Writer Chris Brancato ("Hoodlum," "Species II") has scripted the rewrites.

Sources said the film's producers are offering Johnny Depp the male lead and that "Thieves" could go in April.

Avril 2001 Jennifer Lopez is in negotiations to star in and produce for Warner Bros. a remake of the 1955 Doris Day-James Cagney musical romance "Love Me or Leave Me." Robert De Niro is in talks to also star and produce.

Howard Gould is in negotiations to write the screenplay, which will be loosely based on the original MGM film. The updated version will be a romantic story and love triangle set in the musical world and will not be based, as was the original film, on the true story of 1930s torch singer Ruth Etting.

There is no start date yet, and both actors are expected take on another film project before "Love Me."

The original film, directed by Charles Vidor, follows Etting (Day) as she is discovered by a Chicago racketeer (Cagney) who uses his showbiz connections to help her career. She continues to string him along but falls in love with a musician (Cameron Mitchell).

Sources said Warners landed the remake rights through a sale of titles in the MGM library to Ted Turner, now vice chairman of AOL Time Warner. Warners senior vp production Courtenay Valenti is overseeing the project under president of worldwide theatrical production Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Although the deals are not sealed, it is expected that De Niro and Jane Rosenthal's Tribeca Prods. will produce with Lopez through her Nuyorican Prods., marking Lopez's first feature producing effort. The production will be in association with producing/management firm Handprint Entertainment. Rosenthal, De Niro, Lopez and Benny Medina are expected to produce with David Guillod executive producing.

The actress is fielding several feature film offers, including Warner Bros.' "Taking Lives," for which the latest draft by Nicholas Kazan is said to have attracted the actress.

De Niro has a number of projects on his plate, including "Meet the Fockers," a sequel to "Meet the Parents" for Universal, and a sequel to Warners' "Analyze This."

De Niro is repped by CAA, Lopez by ICM and Handprint. Both actors will be seen this year in films for Warners: Lopez in "Angel Eyes" and De Niro in "City by the Sea."

2001. Jennifer Lopez is in negotiations to star in Columbia Pictures' suspense thriller "Tick-Tock." No director is attached, though the project is being eyed for a possible fall start.

Written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry, "Tick-Tock" is the story of an amnesiac who wakes up in the custody of the FBI and finds that he is the prime suspect in a series of bombings in Los Angeles. There is no male star attached to the project.

Helmer Danny Boyle ("Trainspotting") was on board to direct the project but dropped out last month over creative differences.

Hofflund/Polone's Gavin Polone is producing the project, which is being supervised by Columbia Pictures executive vp Matt Tolmach and creative executive Jonathan Kadin.

Lopez, repped by ICM and Handprint, is in production on the studio's "Enough" for director Michael Apted. She also is attached to star in Warner Bros./Village Roadshow Pictures' "Taking Lives," which is expected to follow "Tick-Tock.

According to Variety, Tony Scott (Enemy of the State, Top Gun) will direct actress-singer Jennifer Lopez in the Warner Brothers action flick Taking Lives. Taking Lives is based on Michael Pye's novel about "an FBI profiler on the trail of a prolific murderer who kills strangers and assumes their identities." Lopez would play the FBI profiler. The production will get underway post-strike. Scott is currently wrapping up work on the Robert Redford-Brad Pitt thriller Spy Game.

Tony Scott has long been associated with Taking Lives, a project that both Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow were approached to star in before Lopez finally signed on. Variety also disclosed that Lopez has dumped her biopic of artist Frida Kahlo in favor of Taking Lives after it became clear that the rival Kahlo biopic starring Salma Hayek would beat her version to the punch.

Jennifer Lopez has signed up for New Line Cinemas romantic comedy Bridge and Tunnel, says Variety.

Lopez will play a stock trader who relies on a suburban teen who day-trades on his home PC.

Laura Ziskin ("Spider-Man") and Jennifer Lopez are teaming to develop the novel "Dirty Girls Club" for Lopez to topline, reports Variety.

Pic would be based on unpublished first effort from Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, a former features writer for the Boston Globe and more recently a Latin pop music writer for the Los Angeles Times. Story concerns six college friends -- Latina women of different national extractions and economic strata -- who reunite 10 years after graduating and continue to rendezvous every six months thereafter.

Valdes-Rodriguez wrote the novel last February, after her acrimonious split with the Times left her unemployed and scrambling for work. After accusing the Times of racial insensitivity, Valdes-Rodriguez spent 10 days writing 300 pages of the novel she'd kicked around for years.

In a stunning blitzkrieg of bidding, St. Martin's Press acquired the rights to the femme novel for just under $500,000 in July. Col-based Ziskin then brought it in to the studio, with an eye toward having Lopez star.

Valdes-Rodriguez had previously expressed interest in having Lopez play Usnavys, a Puerto Rican PR exec whose mother named her after the U.S. Navy's flotilla anchored in San Juan harbor.

Maguire To Unite Smith And Lopez In Kiss

Columbia Pictures is in talks with "Bridget Jones's Diary" helmer Sharon Maguire to direct "Last First Kiss, (Hitch)" reports Variety

The romantic comedy is being talked up as a potential onscreen pairing of Will Smith and Jennifer Lopez.

Smith would play a date doctor who claims that his service can match lifemates in three dates. An attractive female journalist seeks his services in order to expose the doc as a scam artist but discovers things about him as well as herself. Lopez is being courted to play the reporter.

Since earning raves for "Diary," Maguire has been highly selective in choosing a followup. If she makes a deal, a rewrite will be done with Bisch, a Gotham-based journo.

However, Smith and Lopez are both in high demand and have several other engagements. Smith is making a Bad Boys sequel, while Lopez is soon to start shooting The Chambermaid opposite Ralph Fiennes.

Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez are set to star in the period drama American Darlings, according to Variety.

Kidman has been the driving force behind the construct of the film, a drama about a white female swing band that joins forces with a group of black and Hispanic musicians at a time when women were ostracized from playing male-dominated clubs. Those sex barriers shattered soon after President Roosevelt declared war on Japan and the women suddenly played the hottest clubs and even squared off against the Count Basie orchestra at the Apollo Theater.

Lopez and Kidman are to shocase thier singing voices in the movie as the producers behind Chicago are producing.

Which one of the following actresses would you like to see playing a badass drug kingpin: Jennifer Lopez, Eva Mendes or Penélope Cruz? I ask this question because those are the three names currently circling the lead role in Queen of the South. Warner Independent has just nabbed Jonathan Jakubowicz (Secuestro Express) to helm the film, which revolves around a "Mexican woman who escaped Spain after her drug mule boyfriend is killed, then becomes a drug kingpin and seeks revenge for her boyfriend's murder." Based on Arturo Perez-Reverte's novel, they're calling this one a female version of Scarface -- which automatically piques my interest -- and appears to be one of the more sought-after female roles out there right now.

If you want my opinion, I'd have to say J-Lo is the frontrunner here. Cruz is too cute and fragile, and Mendes hasn't shown me enough range to take on a role like this -- whereas Lopez is a pretty decent actress when she's given the right material. I know folks love to bash Lopez, but I thoroughly enjoyed her in Out of Sight,, and heard lots of good things about her performance in the upcoming El Cantante. But as a woman with a huge fanbase (who also has a music career to worry about), is "drug kingpin" dangerous territory from a PR standpoint? Would you J-Lo fans like to see her in a role like this? And if not, who would you choose to play the female Scarface? Perhaps we should just dress Pacino in drag, a la Travolta in Hairspray -- whaddya think?

According to the fellas at Latino Review, Saldana is only the 2nd Latina woman (after Jennifer Lopez) to take the lead in a big studio film.
